On July 19, 1958, a group of Wichita students began a movement, the Dockum Drug Store Sit-In, that would become a critical moment in the history of ending segregation. The student activists exhibited the attributes, characteristics, and skills of emerging leaders. Through their planning, preparation, organization, commitment, respect, and dedication, they effected change during a very volatile time. Ultimately, those same leadership qualities are necessary to affect change in todays’ climate. The Dockum VR Project recreates the story of these activists and teaches leadership skills to a new generation. The Dockum VR project will provide an immersive experience of three key phases in the Dockum story. The first segment will enable viewers / participants to explore how the group of students prepared for the sit-in at the church in the first segment. The second will allow them to participate at the lunch counter as an activist by joining fellow demonstrators at the lunch counter. During the final segment, viewers / participants will explore the organizers’ contributions to their communities and the legacy of this sit-in.
