Project Description
Nonwhite entrepreneurs rarely appear in broad-based histories or surveys of American enterprise. Existing studies of ethnic/nonwhite businesses focus upon commercial operations; this project gives priority to illuminating the motivations of nonwhite individuals to become entrepreneurs. Using video and audio interviews with African American, Asian American and Latino entrepreneurs in Wichita, the project foregrounds the city’s nonwhite businesses. Mellon funding would cover the cost of a professional videographer and small honoraria to interviewees. Recorded video interviews of local African American, Asian American, and Latino entrepreneurs telling their business-related stories will create an important resource that benefits a variety of constituent groups, including business students and prospective nonwhite entrepreneurs who would find the interviews both informative and inspirational.
